What should I expect during my first visit to Angel Oak Animal Hospital?

During your first visit, Dr. Rivers, Dr. Pratt, or Dr. Leffler will conduct a "nose-to-tail" wellness examination to review every aspect of your pet's health. We focus on compassion and competence, ensuring your pet feels at ease in our peaceful office atmosphere. We recommend bringing any previous medical records and a negative fecal test result or stool sample if you are bringing a new puppy or kitten.

Are your veterinarians experienced in surgery and advanced care?

Yes. The doctors have a combined over 50 years of experience in veterinary medicine, graduating cum laude from the University of Georgia D.V.M. program. Our team specializes in soft tissue surgery, geriatric care, and advanced dental procedures, supported by our high-tech in-house diagnostic laboratory.

Does my pet really need heartworm prevention every month in Charleston?

Absolutely. Due to the high mosquito population in the Lowcountry and Johns Island, heartworm disease is a significant year-round threat. We provide heartworm testing and prevention plans to ensure your pet is protected through every season. We recommend heartworm testing every 12 months.

How do I prepare my pet for hurricane season in South Carolina?

Preparation is key for Lowcountry pet owners. We recommend ensuring your pet is microchipped and that their vaccinations are up to date (especially if they may need to stay in a boarding facility during an evacuation). Keep a "pet emergency kit" with at least a two-week supply of medications from our online pharmacy and any anti-anxiety medication needed for travel.

When is the best time to schedule a dental cleaning for my pet?

Dental disease is the most common chronic infection in pets. We recommend a dental evaluation during your pet's annual wellness exam. Based on that exam we can schedule an anesthetized comprehensive full mouth exam and treatment. We utilize dental radiography (X-rays) to see beneath the gumline, ensuring we catch issues like tooth decay before they cause your pet significant pain.

What are your hours, and do I need an appointment for urgent care?

We are open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM, Wednesday from 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM, and Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. While we recommend booking an appointment online or via our app, we do offer urgent care and diagnostic services during regular business hours. For after-hours emergencies, please contact a local 24-hour emergency facility or urgent care clinic.

Can I book an appointment online?

Yes! You can book directly through our website via the "Book Online" button or by using our dedicated mobile app.

Is your facility wheelchair accessible?

At the moment, our wheelchair ramp is undergoing maintenance and is not fully accessible. If you require assistance when visiting our hospital, please call us at (843) 559-1838, and our team will be happy to assist you and your pet into the building.

What are your emergency protocols for after-hours pet care?

For after-hours emergencies, please contact a local 24-hour emergency facility or urgent care clinic.

Are your veterinarians "Fear-Free" certified or trained?

Our veterinarians and team utilize low-stress handling techniques based on the pet’s response and stress level.  This often includes food enrichment and may include pre-appointment sedation and/or anti-anxiety medication.
